Training and Capacity Building

In cooperation with GMOS the CNRM has an ongoing training and capacity building program to support countries to develop their own observing infrastructures as part of their own Nation Implementation Plans as requested by the Minamata Convention that will enter into force in 2020. Integration of GMOS global network with other existing programs includes the arrangement of training and intercomparison exercises regarding measurement methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) used in GMOS and involve collaboration with external networks. In particular, in order to ensure the correct implementation of SOPs at each GMOS site providing knowledge transfer between GMOS and external networks to facilitate the harmonization of methods and interpretation of results, a number of training have been provided with regular intervals during the first two years of the project for GMOS ground-based site managers on measurement and maintenance tasks in the field. These type of training are especially useful for GMOS members that for the first time start up mercury measurements. In addition, the training meeting also took advantage of the experience from all participants opening discussions on the best practices for monitoring atmospheric mercury species in ambient air and in deposition within the GMOS global mercury observation network in order to serve researchers, modelers and the GMOS network design itself.

The GMOS training exercises on Ambient Air Mercury Speciation have been led by experienced GMOS and outside partners. Several participants from GMOS measurement sites and Institutions, plus representatives from instrument manufacturers (Tekran inc., Tess-Com, Lumex) and the U.S. NADP/AMNet Program took part to the training exercises occurred at the CNR-IIA, as reported below:
